Preparing your Heart and Home for the Holidays
Nov 03, 2022It's November and the holiday season is here - in social media, TV, stores and all the ads.
What are your first feelings when you think about the holidays coming? Don’t filter - just truly, what’s the first gut feeling - the thought right before you self-correct and declare, “I love the holidays!” If you go right there, great, but for me (and I’m sure I’m not alone) the very first hidden thoughts often include...
Will I be able to please everyone? Will my kids want to be home? What do I need to do to make the holidays great for everyone, including myself? Will I be able to afford to buy enough to make it all feel festive? Will my family and friends want to be in my home - is it decorated well, is there enough seating, is it inviting and appealing, can I make it entertaining enough? What if my mother in law, mother, sister, _____ gets upset with me again? How will I deal with other people’s expectations? How can we enjoy our holidays without overwhelm, exhaustion or resentment?
Depending on our personalities, these thoughts might be about protecting ourselves (hello, people pleasers and introverts) or they could be about living up to our own or others expectations.
Either way, they all come down to our thoughts and feelings. And guess what? Your thoughts and feelings create your results.
So if you’re thinking about how demanding your mother in law gets over the holidays, you will find all the evidence for it and you will experience just that. If you think instead, "She really loves our family and our holiday traditions and I’m grateful for how much she values us." That love and belonging is what you will experience. Now that’s a simplified example. Of course, you might need to set some boundaries with that mother-in-law, but if you do it in the spirit of appreciation instead of resentment, it will go so much better, right?
All that to say, the holidays are full of opportunities to transform our HEARTS and MINDS so that we can feel all the good, warm, joyful feelings instead of pressure, overwhelm or frustration.
AND....
A key component of the holiday season is gathering. Our homes become a backdrop to all the festivities and memory-making. Creating a home you love that functions well for gathering your family and friends makes a huge difference.
